There has been a lot of chatter in the YouTube world lately about YouTube switching over to a paid service, and it has some creators really worried. Let me explain what’s going on: YouTube did just announce a new paid ad-free service called YouTube Red. It allows you to watch your favorite YouTube videos without being interrupted by ads. They are calling it the “ultimate” YouTube experience.

In addition to getting ad-free service, Red subscribers will also be able to save videos and songs to mobile devices, and also be able to watch videos offline. The subscription costs $9.99 a month if you buy through YouTube, or $12.99 from an app store.

This new paid service has a lot of creators wondering how it will affect the YouTube/creator partnership. The partner program legal terms have been changed, and creators who use the program will have to agree to the new terms. To see these terms, go to the creator’s studio, click on your channel, then monetization, and you will see guidelines and information. Under that, you will be able to see the new terms.

Basically, the new terms state that YouTube creators or partners will be paid by monthly view and watch time, and it will be rated against other creators. YouTube will calculate it and give the creator a cut.

Clear as mud? I thought so too.

But after October 28, 2015, if you are a creator who wants to be paid by YouTube on any of your videos, ads, or subscriptions, you have to accept their terms. If you’re with an MCN, your MCN has most likely already agreed on your behalf.

Will there be exclusive content for Red subscribers? Yes. In fact, the #1 most subscribed to channel, Pewdiepie, will have Red subscriber-only content, and it’s upset a lot of his subscribers. Red-only content is created in partnership with YouTube with some of the most successful YouTube stars, but like 99% of the content is going to be open for everyone. It’s going to be on the Red, but it’s also going to be on regular old YouTube.

Another question people are asking is if ad-free blockers will work. Some people use ad-free blockers in their web browser to block ads, and I would tell them that they might want to look at other options soon.

The reason why I think YouTube is getting into the paid subscription game is because of one thing: music. 40 of the top 100 YouTube channels are music channels. So this is YouTube’s attack against music streamers like Spotify, Pandora, and Apple.

Another offer Red subscribers get is called the YouTube Music App, which launched today. It is designed to let users hit the play button and sit back to do whatever they want while YouTube plays in the background. Brands like Spotify and Pandora offer this type of experience, but what’s unique about YouTube’s new service is that you can do it with video in addition to music, and you can do it offline. That means users can download the videos and watch or listen offline.

YouTube is always trying to implement changes and stay with current trends, and I think YouTube Red is a good example of this. We’ll have to wait and see how it does.

YouTube announced “YouTube Red,” a $9.99-per-month subscription service for YouTube that will launch on October 28. The service lets you watch videos ad-free among other premium features, and it will eventually fund the production of premium, members-only video content.

At an announcement event, YouTube also launched “YouTube Music,” another specialized “vertical” app interface along the lines of YouTube Gaming and YouTube Kids.
