Google has finally done it! We can setup a Google+ Custom URL. Only Google wants it set up specifically their way by telling us the URL that can actually be used. But there is a simple trick that I will show you to “work around” this and give you more options than Google allows us to have for your personal profile.
There are two ways to do this:
- Login to your Google+ account. You will see the pre-approved notification. Click on the blue button that says “get URL” and choose the name that you want or request a different one in certain cases (it doesn’t always show up). Agree to the terms of service and change URL. Confirm your URL for your page by clicking the green button to confirm choice. Now you have a custom URL.
- If the first way doesn’t work, there is another location where you can change the URL. Go to the “About” section on the left-hand side. Go to “Get URL” and it will repeat the same thing you tried before. Now, agree to terms of service and pick the different name but put “Change URL”.
Some of you might login to claim your custom URL for your Google+ page and have been unsuccessful. Many people in the world may have a name distinctive to yours. Add a few extra letters or numbers to this URL to get one that’s unique to yours.
Here is the “work around” I was telling you about, but this will only work until Google changes the way that we actually choose our custom URL, so you need to be aware that you should proceed with caution. And, this only works with personal profiles and NOT business pages.
- Make sure you are logged into your Google+ page. Change your Google+ last name (I suggest making your last name your middle initial) then you need to logout of Google+ and log back in. Once your logged back in, check the about section and under the link tab you will see the “Get Custom URL”. You cannot use your first name then last name because I already tried it and it does not work. Google has reserved that for some reason. You will need to use your first name, middle initial, and then type in your last name where is asks for your extra letters and numbers.
- Once you get that custom URL, you can change your name back. This is a very special note: You really need to understand this. You can only change your Google+ profiles name 3 times in 2 years. So you will want to be careful.
