One of the great things that I get to do is collaborate with my good YouTube friends from time to time. One of my favorite YouTube experts is David Walsh from across the pond. We spent some time talking about audience development, how it relates to YouTube, and also how it deals with subscribers and getting more subscribers to turn into views which ultimately turn into fans.
Some of the things we discussed were how to know the difference between a subscriber and a super fan:
- Subscribers will come onto your channel ever so often if they have something they want to look up and know that they can find it on your specific channel.
- Super fans are the ones who get out of bed first thing in the morning, go to your YouTube channel before eating breakfast or brushing their teeth, and look to make sure that you have a video uploaded to your YouTube channel.
Every YouTube channel needs subscribers and super fans. This is the reason you should be thinking of what you’re going to do with your content. When you have developed your content into being super informative and entertaining, you must upload it. There are videos uploaded on certain days and at certain times that work best for your subscribers and fans. In fact, there is a 48 hour rule to live by. This is where you comment back on every comment given from your subscribers. They are watching and waiting, and this is what makes them want to be first with a comment.
Comments are what adds and builds to your community of super fans. These are the ones that are actually going to take you to the next level and ultimately get more engagement from them. If you’re making great content, your fans will want to engage back with you, see that you have the same interests and likes, and then realize that you are one of the coolest YouTube channels out there. These types of fans are the ones who will actually come back and say, “I’ve never had a famous YouTuber reply to me before!” And then they will stick with you for life.
Other tips that foster a solid community are developing your audience growth by being consistent. Consistency is important because your subscribers and super fans will be camping out on your channel just waiting for your next upload. No matter what day you add your next video, consistency is the trick to making everything successful. Make certain that you schedule uploads regularly and watch for those fans that are patiently waiting for your great content.
Okay, so now you’re thinking… “You guys have like a hundred bajillion subscribers. All I’ve got is two subscribers‒ one being my mom and the other is my dog.” Well, this is the part that you have to remember and understand. We all have to start out from the beginning, so never fear about your two subscribers right now. But if you remember this, you will find yourself smiling when you suddenly realize that you have built up a massive following simply by making great content and then uploading it on a regular schedule. The other part includes being persistent in this endeavor. If you work the two together, then this is probably the most important advice to follow if you want audience growth.
Alright, now you are getting along with our YouTube channel, adding some pretty good content, and suddenly stop to see that you still have the same two subscribers that you did six months ago. Don’t you dare think of quitting! When you think that there is no use to this stuff and wonder if you should give up, try using your analytics. Analytics are a great tool to use because they show you exactly what is going on with your channel. You need to see if people are watching, when they watch, how they watch, and find what needs to be tweaked just a little bit to get more engagement from your target audience. What content do they engage with the most? What makes them tick? When you find that your small adjustments have made huge changes with your fans’ online engagement, now is the time to think about monetizing your content to make some money off of YouTube.
There are literally thousands of ways to get people onto your website. Even if you don’t have the technical skills yet, simply offer your fans and subscribers t-shirts or some sort of apparel that has your brand all over it. Make up a cool catch phrase; design something that they can see every day with your brand that relates to your content. If you are not certain what to offer your fans, find two of the best designs that you have and let your fans vote on which one they like the best. That is yet another great way to get more engagement. Fans love to contribute and feel like they are part of the brand they are supporting. These are the guys that will be lining up to buy your merchandise.
But it doesn’t stop here. When your super fans love your merchandise, they will want 10 of them to give as family Christmas presents. They will also tell all their friends on Facebook, Twitter, and other widely used social media platforms about you and your brand.
By following these recommendations, you not only build your YouTube channel community, you develop relationships with your subscribers. Then you will start to turn your subscribers into super fans and ultimately grow some avid subscribers into a successful booming YouTube channel.
