I get a lot of questions from my subscribers on how to properly tag your YouTube videos to help them get noticed. There are four tags that I always use in my videos, and since YouTube does not care what tags you use to rank your videos in searches, this, right here, is the information that will help you be a success at properly tagging your videos.
There are a few important things to learn so that your tags are properly applied. Go to your Video Manager and edit an existing video, and then click the Upload button. The example I will use here is a video about the Google Penguin 2.1 update for those that work in Internet or online marketing. Right here is the one tag that I always use called the Specific Tag. Specific Tags are basically one word and for this Google Penguin example, this would call for a specific keyword like “Google”. Specific Tags will act like a search engine and helps your content stick out when people are searching, so this would be the one that I would use.
Another type of tag that is important to use is what they call a Compound Tag. Compound Tags are several words that can be used and the first compound tag that is best would be the title of your video. Let’s say the title of this example we are using is Google Penguin 2.1 Update. This would be the perfect tag with the words “Google Penguin 2.1 Update” making this a perfect compound tag for your YouTube video.
Now, keep in mind that if you are doing a compound tag that is in the title, then go ahead and put your conjunctions and prepositions in there. If you are just doing compound tags such as add singular words like “of,” “if” and “in.” Only add these words when they are in the title and never by themselves. Just leave them out because YouTube will not even look at them.
Generic Tags are the How To, Vlog, or Tutorial words in your video title. YouTube spots these tag words and starts to give suggestions with other key words such as ‘Video Blog’. Since our example is a video on Internet or online marketing, the suggestions come up as a generic tag with the words Search Engine Optimization. This is a good choice to use here.
Do a check on misspelled words to see what is most frequently misspelled because that is where your video will show up because it is in those misspelled tags. Remember: Don’t mix up your words and watch for spelling errors. This is the tag section that you can only do 500 characters. It sounds like a lot, but when you start doing some of those compound tags, it will fill right up. You want to be able to select the exact tags that you’re looking for.
Please use caution and don’t mislead your tags or titles in your YouTube videos because this really affects the performance of your video ranking. Why is this? When a user stumbles upon your video from a misleading tag or title, then they will not stay engaged on your video. This can really accumulate a negative effect on your video and even your channel. YouTube uses this meta information about your video as it does a quick assessment or evaluation and once it collects enough data of its own regarding the watch time and user engagement, then it disregards all the meta information and just uses the information that is collected.
Focus on the specifics of your YouTube video by asking yourself what your video is about. The answer that you give yourself is probably the starting place to start accurately tagging your video so you can start ranking in search results. And that’s how simple it is to properly tag your YouTube videos.
