Session Watch Time – Most Important Factor in Ranking your YouTube Videos

In this video, I talked with Tim Schmoyer from the channel “Video Creators” about the #1 YouTube ranking factor. Viewers often ask us how to get found and ranked better on YouTube, and Tim and I share the “secrets” to YouTube success.

YouTube has two “Watch Times” that do more for video ranking than any other factor: Viewer Watch Time and Session Watch Time. YouTube wants its viewers to watch as many videos as possible, staying on YouTube as long as possible, and seeing as many ads as possible. If your video helps YouTube reach these goals, they thank you by ranking your videos higher. They also pair your video with related videos, and that’s how your video pops up more often in a better ranking.

Some ways to increase your Watch Times:

Create playlists on your channel as a very practical way to extend the viewing session and manually curating that session for viewers. Some generic playlists often include Recent Uploads, Most Popular Uploads, Tutorials, and Collaborations.

Check your Analytics page and see where your audience retention is coming from so you can continue to create what your viewers like to see. You can see on a graph exactly where the majority of people stop watching that video so you know where it gets “boring” so you can adjust your content for future videos.

Collaborate with other YouTubers, promoting each other’s channels by bringing potential subscribers from a similar pool of viewers.

Be consistent in posting new content on a consistent schedule so your viewers know when to look for your new videos and give you more session time.
