Some of you have asked does sub for sub on YouTube actually work, especially for those that are looking to start a YouTube channel. And to answer that question, I asked my good friend Tim Schmoyer to let me in on what he thought about Sub for Sub.

For some of you rookies out there, Sub for Sub is a technique that was set up to boost sub numbers across your YouTube community. Basically, you ask someone to subscribe to your channel and you will subscribe back to theirs. No strings attached. But there are some things that may not look as good in the long run by doing this.

Both Tim and I are certified by YouTube in Audience Growth, and when the question arises within our circles, the answer is always… no. For Tim, he said that he has never seen it work. It is not what you want to do to grow your channel because you’re not asking viewers to subscribe because they care about you, your videos, or your content. If you are subscribing to a channel that you don’t even care to watch, then there are no comments, no engagement, and no value to the dialogue that is happening around that video.

I have to agree with Tim on this. Sub for Sub is not just to get a number. It’s about watch time and if your subscribers don’t watch the videos on your channel, then what is the point? People that actually spend a lot of time doing comments and spending time with their audience, this builds their communities like Facebook or a Google+ community… even a forum. Then you know what people like to watch and post video content that will attract others to subscribe to your channel.

So both Tim and I both think that Sub for Sub is not all that it is made out to be. There is really no reliable connection to making this grow your YouTube channel if you have 50,000 subscribers and only 10 of them view your videos from time to time. And if your community is only half-hearted about commenting and engaging back with you, then your channel will sit and go stagnate.
