Creators have been getting frustrated for a long time over the 301+ view counter freeze on YouTube. In fact, this is one of the most commonly brought up issues from YouTubers.
The view freeze is one of those things that was established when YouTube was brand new; Some folks at YouTube decided they needed to freeze the view count when it reached a certain number, and the number they came up with was 300. The freeze was put in place so that YouTube would have time (usually less than a day) to verify that the views were legitimate and not from bots, etc.
When the numbers were plugged into the system, YouTube just happened to specify that video views were allowed on the counter up to and including the 300th view (hence the 301st view being put on hold). So any view after that had to wait in line while the verification process took place, then all the views that had accumulated in the interim were added once the all-clear was given. The view counter didn’t have any holds after that 301, so views were added as they came in.
But now YouTube has a new system that fixed the dreaded 301 freeze by using real-time analytics. They can tell in real time whether or not a view is legitimate.
I have noticed some correlative things with the new system: It takes longer for a newly uploaded video to be distributed to my subscribers than it did with the old system. So although the new system more accurately determines authentic subscribers/viewers vs. bots, it slows down the distribution time more than it used to without the real-time verification. Makes sense.
YouTube creators seem to embrace the new system overall, grateful to say goodbye to the old 301 freeze.
I love to see innovation in this business, and I’m glad YouTube tries news things to improve and keep up with the competition.
